There has been extensive research on hypnosis and both physical and emotional pain management. One of the ways hypnosis was originally used for was as an anesthetic.
In the 18th and 19th centuries hypnosis was explored to alleviate pain during medical procedures by inducing a trance like state.
James Braid coined the term “hypnosis” to reference altered states of consciousness and techniques that could numb pain.
Current research has also shown that hypnosis can significantly reduce both acute and chronic pain.
There are several theories about how hypnosis affects pain.
Some theories suggest that hypnosis alters the way brain processes pain signals, and perceives the intensity of pain. Other theories believe that hypnosis affects emotional responses to pain so that the subject has a more positive pain experience.
I believe that my clients have a learning experience at the level of their subconscious. This learning experience is guided by the subconscious mind and actually changes neural pathways and the way the body manages pain.
Pain should never go away completely because pain has an important message from the mind and body.
Pain tells you important things likeL
“You’ve been pushing yourself a little too much lately, let’s take it easy today.”
“I didn’t like what just happened – let’s not do that again.“
This is different from temporary changes from a visualization meditation or a pre-recorded generic hypnosis sesh.
In Accelerated Hypnosis, the client actually has an experience, it isn’t a visualization. It might sound like a visualization because the client is having an experience in their subconscious and won’t have the words to describe what is happening, except to use metaphors to try to make sense of it.
Research
Research shows that hypnosis can reduce the pain associated with migraines, chronic back pain, arthritis, and even cancer-related discomfort.
In addition to reducing pain during medical procedures, research shows that hypnosis can also reduce the need for high doses of pain medication.
For me, hypnosis fits in with my holistic approach to health, and helps me manage pain, drug-free. Woot!
For my clients, it helps them to access a greater sense of control with their health and well-being; gives them relief from pain; and improves the quality of their lives day to day.
