How Drugs Hijack Your Brain
Your brain is designed for survival so it focuses on 2 things:
Pleasure = Good
Pain = Bad
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps you feel pleasure on a scale out of ten.
A really great day where everything flows and the sun is shining is 10/10 🙂
Coke, amphetamines, prescription opioids break this natural scale and register at 100 out of 10.
Mind. Blown.
Your scale has been reset to 100 and now a really great day is only registers at 10/100.
Now your best day hardy registers anymore. 😦
Because these drugs have hijacked your survival system, feeling pleasure from substance use is tied to surviving the day.
As time goes on, the brain gets overstimulated and reduces both the amount of dopamine released and the number of receptors. This is called tolerance – now you need to increase the amount of drug consumed and the frequency to feel good. What gives you pleasure also narrows to that one thing that you’re addicted to.
At this point, the addict seeks drugs like his survival depends on it. It is no longer a choice but is now impairing judgement and decision making.
You can retrain your brain but the longer your brain stays hijacked, the more challenging it will be to recover…
