Breaking the Cycle: How Accelerated Hypnotherapy Can Help Heal the Iatrogenic Injury From Talk Therapy
Have you ever found yourself stuck in an emotional loop, trying to move past a traumatic event, whether it’s a big “T” trauma or a smaller, lingering “little t” event? Maybe you’ve spent months—or even years—trying to resolve it through traditional therapies, mindfulness, or self-help strategies, only to find that the problem feels worse now than when it started.
This frustrating cycle isn’t uncommon. In fact, it’s something I’ve seen with many of my clients. They come to me with a long history of trying to fix a problem, only to discover that the very efforts they’ve been making have unintentionally created additional layers of anxiety and emotional distress. This is what’s known as an iatrogenic effect—unintended harm caused by the attempts to resolve the issue.
Why Emotional Problems Resist Logical Solutions
Emotional issues, by their very nature, exist in the subconscious realm. Trying to solve them with logic and conscious understanding is like trying to learn to ride a bike by reading a manual. You can understand the mechanics of pedaling, balancing, and steering, but when you actually get on the bike, that intellectual knowledge doesn’t necessarily translate into action.
Similarly, emotional problems aren’t resolved by thinking your way through them. In fact, repeatedly analyzing the issue can intensify the anxiety, creating a tangled web of frustration and self-doubt. The subconscious mind operates on a different level, where emotions, patterns, and beliefs are deeply rooted.
When Therapy Falls Short
Traditional talk therapy can be invaluable for articulating your problems, organizing your thoughts, and gaining some level of understanding. But what happens when the problem involves feelings that can’t easily be put into words?
You might say, “I feel anxious,” but your version of anxiety could be far more intense than someone else’s. Words often fall short of fully capturing the complexity of your emotions. This gap between what you feel and what you can express is one of the reasons why traditional therapies sometimes struggle to resolve deeply rooted emotional issues.
How Hypnotherapy Goes Deeper
Hypnotherapy works differently. By bypassing the critical, logical mind and accessing the subconscious, it allows you to work directly with the emotional aspects of your problems. Inside a hypnotherapy session, it’s like getting on that bike—experiencing the balance, movement, and flow firsthand. You don’t just learn about change; you feel it happening.
Even if you’ve tried hypnotherapy before without success, it doesn’t mean it can’t work for you. There are different types of hypnotherapy and varying skill levels among practitioners. Think of it like cars: a basic, worn-out vehicle might not get you very far, but a finely tuned race car driven by an expert can take you exactly where you want to go—quickly and efficiently.
My Personal Journey
I understand the struggle of feeling stuck firsthand. I spent nearly a year practicing mindfulness three times a day, hoping it would ease my anxiety. Instead, it seemed to reinforce it. Every time I sat with my difficult emotions, I felt like I was deepening the groove of anxiety rather than alleviating it.
It wasn’t until I found hypnotherapy that things shifted. Hypnotherapy allowed me to access the emotional core of my anxiety and resolve it in a way that mindfulness alone couldn’t.
